Retrospec Solana 1/2-Inch Thick Yoga Mat
Our verdict
Solana is the middle setting between a thin sticky mat and the one-inch slabs Retrospec also sells. Half an inch of high-density foam is enough to make kneeling, Pilates and stretching on tile or concrete comfortable, and the ribbed top keeps it from being as skittish as most thick mats.
- 1/2-inch high-density foam
- 72 by 24 inches
- Ribbed slip-resistant surface
- Nylon carrying strap included
Why we picked it
Thickness is the reason to buy it, and Retrospec picked a sensible amount. A half inch absorbs the pressure that a three millimeter mat passes straight to your kneecaps, but it stops short of the wobbly, sink-in feeling of the inch-thick version, so lunges and planks still feel like they have a floor under them. At 72 by 24 inches there is room for a tall adult to lie down flat.
The rest is practical detail. The ribbed surface adds bite in both directions, the mat weighs under three pounds so carrying it to a class is no ordeal, and the nylon strap that comes in the box is a strap rather than a fraying loop of elastic. Cleaning is a wipe with mild soap and water and a hang to dry; it is not made to be submerged or thrown in a machine.
Best for
- Kneeling work on hard floors
- Pilates, stretching and core sessions
- Anyone between thin and thick mats
Keep in mind
- Foam this thick still compresses underfoot, so standing balance poses feel less certain than on a thin rubber mat.
- Retrospec says a new mat can give off an odor, and recommends unrolling it to air for a day or two.
- Hand wash only; soap, water and a hang to dry, never submerged or machine washed.
